A hard tonneau cover is a type of truck bed cover that provides a high level of protection for your cargo. This type of cover is typically made from strong materials, such as aluminum, and features a hard, rigid design that helps to keep your cargo secure from unwanted access or theft. Tonneau covers come in various styles, from trifold designs to hard, hinged covers that lock into place.

One of the key benefits of a hard tonneau cover is that it provides excellent protection for your cargo. Unlike soft, flexible covers, hard covers are much more difficult to penetrate, making them an excellent choice for truck owners who need to keep their valuables secure.

In addition to their security features, hard tonneau covers are also designed to be durable and long-lasting, so you can enjoy years of use without having to worry about your cover becoming damaged or worn over time.

When choosing a hard tonneau cover, it's important to consider several factors, including the type of cover you need, the materials it's made from, and the features it includes. Some of the most popular hard tonneau types include trifold, hinged, and hard roll-up covers.

Additionally, you'll want to think about the size and shape of your truck bed, as well as your budget and lifestyle, to ensure that you choose the right cover for your needs.

For as long as I can remember, this debate has been going: Hardcovers or paperbacks.  It feels a bit like ‘coffee vs tea’ or ‘Pepsi or Coke’ and it really creates separate groups (which isn’t a bad thing, per se!). Everyone has their own preference ofcourse, but I was curious to what format was most favourable, so I decided to do a pro-con tally!

I asked my followers and friends on Twitter and Discord about what they like and dislike about both formats. I have my own opinion, ofcourse, but everything I wanted to add was already said by someone else, so it’s all woven in!
The lists aren’t in a random order. As some points were mentioned so often, I decided to rank the lists from ‘most mentioned’ to ‘least mentioned’. The higher it is on the list, the more people seem to agree (and honestly, it’s pretty accurate.)

Without further ado, here are the pros and cons of hardcovers and paperbacks submitted by my own readers!

Disclaimer: This post is just for fun. There is no ”better” or ”superior” in reading. Respect eachother’s choices and just have fun in your own way of reading.

Conclusion

Overall, the paperback seems to be most favourable. While paperbacks may not look as pretty as their hardcover counterpart, the reason most people prefer paperbacks is plain practicality: Paperbacks are lighter, smaller, easier to bring with you on the go and best of all, they’re significantly cheaper.
Though hardcovers aren’t ideal in both size and prize (actually, they are far from ideal), people love them for the aesthethics, such as the beautiful covers, they look really awesome without the dustjacket, they look luxerious, etcetera. There are also extra perks to this format, like proper cover reveals and being able to read the book on release while paperback readers may have to wait another year.

In short, paperbacks are far more practical and favourable in things like size and prize while hardcovers are more attractive for their aesthethical points and early access, but often still not worth it for most because of the cons.

So… who wins?

In pure pros/cons, paperbacks win with more pros and less cons. But as we concluded, aesthethical pros weigh much more for some people than the cons like size and prize, so to give a more definitive answer, I would need to do a whole maths thing with weight and all, and that’s too complicated.

To have another weight in this debate, I also did a quick poll on Twitter, and paperbacks were the winners with about two-thirds of the votes.

https://twitter.com/jetpack/status/1147836587021090816

Long story short, there seems to be no overall winner, but paperbacks seem to be most favourable by the majority of people.

What do you think? Should publishers move on from the old-fashioned favouring of hardcovers? Should paperback become the default, or should the paperback at the very least be released alongside the hardcover?
