introduction

Industrial motors refer to electromagnetic devices that realize the conversion or transmission of electrical energy based on the law of electromagnetic induction.

Their main function is to generate driving torque, thereby serving as a power source for electrical appliances or various machinery, with a relatively large proportion in motors.

Electric motors have a wide range of applications, mainly in industrial fields, electronic information fields, rail transportation fields, new energy vehicle fields, and household appliance fields.

The upstream of the industrial motor industry chain includes raw materials such as electrolytic copper and silicon steel, as well as various accessories such as bearings and coolers.

The midstream is the production and manufacturing of industrial motors.

The downstream includes applications in industries such as industrial, electronic information, automotive, and household appliances.

The current application scope of industrial motors is relatively wide on a global scale.

Meanwhile, under the development background of energy conservation and carbon reduction, countries have successively introduced relevant policies for high efficiency and energy saving, driving rapid growth in the industrial motor industry.

  • It is One of the World’s Largest Two-Pole Induction Electric Motors, Leapfrogging from the 22-Megawatt Induction Motor
  • The New Motor Can Lead to 48 Percent More Uptime, 30 Percent Less Footprint and 98.1 Percent Efficiency
  • It is a Significant Electrification Milestone for the LNG Industry

NANCY, FRANCE — April 5 — GE (NYSE: GE) has recently successfully completed the no-load testing of the 80-megawatt (MW) two-pole induction motor in its factory in Nancy, France. It is one of the world’s largest induction electric motors, leapfrogging from the 22-MW induction motor — the next highest power rating induction motor with a rotating speed up to 4,000 rotations per minute (rpm).

“In the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, reliability is the name of the game. A mid-size LNG facility could suffer costs of $4 million a day through unplanned downtime,” said Ed Torres, Marine and O&G segment leader, GE’s Power Conversion business. “Running 99.5 percent of the time, electric motors are absolutely critical assets to LNG operations. I am proud to announce that our new 80-MW induction motor is now ready to serve the LNG industry with unrivalled high power, reliability and efficiency.”

Operating at a high voltage of 11 kilovolts and running from 2,500-4,000 rpm, GE’s latest innovation sees high motor efficiency up to 98.1 percent, among the highest of electric motors. Compared to its traditional 75-MW two-pole synchronous peer — one of the highest power rating in synchronous motors — it has 10 times less rotating parts and therefore can significantly increase operational reliability, leading to 48 percent more uptime and greater availability. The simpler design also results in a 30 percent smaller footprint and weight, an essential advantage that provides flexibility when integrating the equipment into existing plant infrastructure.

GE has more than 125 years of electrical expertise in a variety of energy industries. After the recent completion of the no-load testing, GE can now provide induction machines with power ratings from 20 to up to 80 MW.

The advancements in technology don’t stop there. Combined with its technical know-how in voltage source inverters and transformers, GE can provide a one-stop shop for integrated system solutions that brings even more reliability, saves energy and helps reduce risks of projects.

“Electrification has breathed new air into the energy landscape due to its high reliability, efficiency and reduced environment footprint. Our latest innovation in the induction motor technology showcases yet another key milestone on the electrification journey of the LNG industry,” said Azeez Mohammed, president and CEO, GE’s Power Conversion business.
