Yunnan Province has surpassed 3 gigawatts of cumulative grid-connected new-type energy storage capacity, reaching 3.035 GW / 6.07 GWh as of May 26, according to the Yunnan Provincial Energy Bureau. The province has exceeded its 14th Five-Year Plan target ahead of schedule.
Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the accelerated development of solar and wind energy—supported by favorable policies—has driven rapid growth in energy storage, which now plays a key role as a flexible resource in the power system.Several milestone projects have recently been commissioned:
The Baoci Energy Storage Station, a national pilot project under China’s new-type energy storage program, has entered operation in Qiubei County. It is China’s first large-scale lithium-sodium hybrid energy storage facility, and Yunnan’s first grid-forming shared storage project.
The Malipo Shared Storage Project adopts a hybrid lithium iron phosphate + vanadium redox flow solution, representing the first use of internationally advanced grid-forming technology in the province.
In Baoshan, a centralized shared storage project with an installed capacity of 600 MW / 1.2 GWh has gone online, making it the largest single-site new-type storage project in Southern China.
To accelerate the growth of its energy storage industry, Yunnan has enhanced top-level planning and strengthened policy support. The province has issued an implementation plan for new-type energy storage and established an integrated “renewables + storage” model, defining mechanisms for dispatch, shared leasing, and market participation. By leveraging the capacity market to address project demand, returns, and operational challenges, Yunnan is improving its business environment and enabling the sector’s transition from initial breakthroughs to large-scale, high-quality development.
