China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and the Standardization Administration have officially released a new national standard titled “Coding Rules for Lithium-Ion Batteries” (GB/T 45565—2025), aimed at enhancing the safety and quality management of lithium-ion batteries throughout their entire lifecycle. The standard will come into effect on November 1, 2025.

Under the new regulation, every newly manufactured lithium-ion battery will be assigned a unique identification code, applicable across all product levels—from individual cells to complete battery systems. This “one battery, one code” mechanism enables comprehensive lifecycle management, from production to recycling, providing a critical foundation for product traceability and regulatory oversight.

Looking ahead, SAMR and the Standardization Administration plan to work with relevant technical committees to promote the adoption of the standard. These efforts will focus on improving alignment across related standards within the lithium battery system, reinforcing the foundation for safe production and strengthening oversight of the industry.
