All posts should be taller and thicker than the fencing materials. By doing so, you are developing a well-built foundation. It contributes to the overall sturdiness and durability of your fence.
For example, if the fence’s height is 6 to 10 feet with 1 or 2 inches in thickness, it’s recommended that your posts are 4 by 4 inches with additional length to bury in the ground.
The spacing between posts plays a part in determining the best post diameter too. The closer together they are, the stronger the fence will be. If you have less space in between posts, the thickness won’t need to be as great. But the more space there is, the thicker your posts should be.
Natural factors such as weather, wear and tear, or animals can impact the longevity of the fence, but with a solid foundation, it’s less likely.
Consider the material of your fence posts. Certain types of wood won’t withstand damage such as cedar, for example.
Douglas fir, oak and #1 southern yellow pine are very strong wood species that can sustain cracking and bending, also easily located.
Store-bought treated wood posts are a great option and look neat and tidy. They’re resistant to rotting and usually don’t require frequent replacing or maintenance. They can be expensive depending on the number of posts you need, but reliable nonetheless.
