The red prickly pear is a unique fruit, grown in arid and semi-arid regions.  It is native to the  southern United States, Mexico and parts of South America.  It grows in many parts of the world and is also a popular staple in the Mediterranean.  The pads of the cactus are commonly eaten, but it is the fruit that grows on the borders of the pads that is delightfully refreshing.  The red varieties are the sweetest, and have been described as tasting like strawberries, watermelon, kiwi with a hint of bubblegum.  While the Red Prickly Pear has a distinct flavor, it is also versatile enough to combine with other fruits and herbs to create an unlimited pallet of flavor options. 

The Red Prickly Pear’s color, which ranges from crimson to a deep magenta, makes it a favorite for food and beverage production.
