China has maintained its position as the world’s largest pumped storage hydropower operator for the ninth consecutive year, according to the 2024 Annual Report on China’s Renewable Energy Development released by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research.
By the end of 2024, the country’s total installed pumped storage capacity surpassed 58 million kilowatts, with 7.75 million kilowatts added during the year. A total of 23 new pumped storage projects were approved in 2024. The report notes a growing shift in pumped storage development from eastern to western China. New projects tend to feature high-head, large-capacity units, while the domestic production of variable-speed pumped storage turbines is speeding up. Advances have also been made in site surveying, construction, and equipment manufacturing.
China benefits from exceptional natural advantages for pumped storage. A nationwide survey identified about 1.6 billion kilowatts of potential capacity, covering existing, under-construction, and planned sites. Nearly every province has suitable locations for pumped storage development. As pumped storage plays an increasingly vital role in stabilizing China’s power grid and supporting renewable energy integration, it is expected to remain a key part of the country’s low-carbon transition.
