If you ask basketballers what they like to play on outdoors, they’ll probably say asphalt or concrete because these are the most common surfaces in urban settings. However, they are not the only surfaces available.

Outdoor basketball courts designed for practice and professional use are normally made from asphalt tarmacadam or polymeric rubber crumb. Asphalt tarmacadam is harder while polymeric rubber has better performance but is more expensive.

Which is the best outdoor basketball surface for you? That depends on your budget and who will be playing on the surface.

Asphalt tarmacadam

Asphalt tarmacadam is made from stone mixed with tar. It requires a stone subfloor and is poured and levelled. The surface is customisable in terms of colour and lining once dry and it offers excellent slip resistance in the wet.

Tarmacadam is associated with a high ball bounce and a hard surface. It isn’t forgiving with falls, but it does provide a pure basketball experience. Professional players like to play on it, and it lasts for several years (up to 15 normally).

Polymeric rubber (EPDM)

Outdoor basketball courts made from polymeric rubber are made from granules of EPDM rubber bonded together with polyurethane (PU). The surface is softer than tarmacadam but still offers a high bounce, so the performance is excellent.

Polymeric surfaces have the advantage of a customisable bounce, which can be altered using shock pads underneath the polymeric top surface. This helps to prevent injuries and makes it a better basketball surface in schools and playgrounds.

Basketball court tiles

A more novel option for outdoor basketball courts is basketball court tiles. These are suitable for amateur use and provide good shock absorption. The flooring system is modular so it can be changed to suit the needs of the players.

Typically, a court made from tiles will be a temporary structure. These courts are not expected to last 10 or 15 years. Tiles will be a good choice if you want to build a basketball court quickly with the option to remove it in the future.
