It’s a popular choice for a reason — natural rubber is a good all-around, general-purpose gasket material. While it shouldn’t be used with fuels, oils or solvents, natural rubber is incredibly water resistant and works very well with metal surfaces. Most closed cell neoprene sponges can meet UL 94HF-1 flame ratings.

It’s typically used for gaskets in oil and fuel pumps or around electrical gear.

Introduced to fill the void left when asbestos was discovered to be a dangerous material, compressed non-asbestos gaskets combine great strength with a high resistance to heat, water, gases, oils, fuels, and chemicals. These types of gaskets are at home in hard-to-seal applications, such as in the presence of steam and sustained high temperatures.
Non-asbestos makes a safe, strong, and highly liquid-resistant gasket material for manufacturers.
