Six Materials For Great Gaskets

15 Nov.,2023

When pipes, boilers, fuel tanks and more need to be joined together, what’s the best way to prevent liquid or gas from leaking?

The answer: a gasket.

At Breiner Innovative, we make a lot of gaskets. Our parts make their way around the world, helping manufacturers, mechanical contractors and more maintain the integrity of their equipment.

Many different non-metallic materials can be used in gasket manufacturing, with each presenting their own unique advantages and abilities under different circumstances. The following examples are some of the most common and versatile non-metallic gasket materials we use.

Natural rubber

It’s a popular choice for a reason — natural rubber is a good all-around, general-purpose gasket material. While it shouldn’t be used with fuels, oils or solvents, natural rubber is incredibly water resistant and works very well with metal surfaces. Natural rubber is great to use with water pumps and pipes for its good shock and vibration resistance qualities.

Natural gum rubber is a gasket material that makes great insulation for water pumps and pipes.

Silicone Rubber

Flexibility, weather resistance, and electrical insulation properties make silicone rubber a very popular choice for gasket materials. Silicone maintains high performance at extreme temperatures, remaining functional between -60°F and more than +400°F. Its versatility makes silicone rubber ideal for a wide variety of applications, including pharmaceutical and food processing environments.

Neoprene Rubber

Typically used in marine and other outdoor applications, neoprene rubber has the ability to resist moderate levels of sunlight, ozone, and other weather elements along with greases, fats, and oils. Neoprene rubber can also be used in refrigerant applications. This polymer can withstand a wide range of temperatures from -31°F to 250°F.

Neoprene rubber is a great material to make gaskets that resist a wide range of solvents and temperatures.

Neoprene Sponge

Neoprene sponge is a gasket material that’s well suited for industrial settings using fuel, oil, and other chemicals. As a synthetic rubber with both open and closed cell forms, it’s cellular nature is great at repelling dust, water, and moisture while still keeping it’s superior absorption, insulation and compressive properties. Most closed cell neoprene sponges can meet UL 94HF-1 flame ratings.

Neoprene sponge gasket material is perfectly suited for insulating caustic fuels, oils, and industrial chemicals.

Cork

Oil and solvent-resistant, cork is a popular gasket material for manufacturers due to its high compressibility and flexibility. Since it comes from the bark of the cork oak tree, cork is a naturally renewable and sustainable gasket material that’s highly impermeable, buoyant, elastic and fire retardant. It’s typically used for gaskets in oil and fuel pumps or around electrical gear.

Cork gaskets are not only renewable resources, but also quite impermeable to fuels and fire.

Compressed Non-Asbestos

Introduced to fill the void left when asbestos was discovered to be a dangerous material, compressed non-asbestos gaskets combine great strength with a high resistance to heat, water, gases, oils, fuels, and chemicals. These types of gaskets are at home in hard-to-seal applications, such as in the presence of steam and sustained high temperatures.

Non-asbestos makes a safe, strong, and highly liquid-resistant gasket material for manufacturers.

There is no one solution to any particular application. Some gasket materials perform admirably in a variety of situations, while some excel or lack in other specific environments. No matter what you require out of your next batch of gaskets, our experts at Breiner Innovative can help you choose the perfect material for your needs.
