O-Rings

O-rings are the simplest mechanical seal gaskets. These doughnut-shaped elastomers seal two or more parts of a mechanism together to prevent leaks. O-rings can be used to permanently seal two static parts of a fluid passage or create a sealed joint for moving parts of a liquid processing system. They have a cross-section that allows them to be properly fitted and compressed between two mechanical parts. O-rings are the most common type of gasket and are used in many different kinds of machines because they are highly reliable, simple to install, and cost-effective.

Although relatively cheap, O-rings can withstand a significant amount of pressure. They come in a range of sizes that are usually based on three dimensions: "internal dimension" or "inside diameter" (ID), "outside dimension" or "outside diameter" (OD) and "thickness" or "cross diameter" (W or CS). Most people refer to the cross diameter when speaking of O-ring sizes; however, industries that require quality seal gaskets often specify all three dimensions and their preferred type of rubber. O-rings can be made from synthetic rubbers (e.g. fluoropolymer rubbers and nitrile rubbers) or thermoplastics.

O-rings do not only serve as seals for liquid-carrying machines, they can also be used to seal oils and fuels. The rubber materials used in O-rings have high resistance to heat and are self-extinguishing, making them useful in a wide variety of machine production industries. Some O-ring materials are also chemically safe for food and drugs, making them the primary seal gaskets used in food factories.

Hoffmeyer carries a wide range of O-rings that suit different industry needs, from the more popular Duro, Nitrile, and Viton® O-rings to specialized rubber materials with different sealing qualities. We also provide kits for every material, making it easy for you to determine the sizes that best suit your needs. If the O-rings you require do not come in standard sizes, we provide O-ring cord-splicing kits.
