What is benefit of AP mode?

In router mode, your NETGEAR device functions normally and all of the router’s features are available.

In access point (AP) mode, your NETGEAR router acts as a gateway for other devices to connect to.  You can set up your router in AP mode to extend the existing WiFi of your ISP-provided hardware. However, some popular features are disabled in AP mode, including the following:

  • Guest network
  • The ability to block specific websites
  • VPN Service
  • Remote Management

We recommend that you enable bridge mode on your ISP gateway and install your NETGEAR or Orbi router in router mode to use all the features of your router. If you cannot enable bridge mode on your ISP gateway, you must turn off the WiFi on your ISP gateway and install your NETGEAR or Orbi router in AP mode.

hello all;

I am looking for benefits of defining a slave deco as an access point vs as a router.

I have a star ocnfiguration with the main deco as a router and I assume the salve is also router (i dont remember if the app even asked for the slave).

I have seen a note fomr the docs as follows:

Note: In AP mode, any router features will be non-configurable (including Parental Controls, Antivirus, Port Forwarding, Address Reservation and QoS, etc), as all the IP addresses are assigned and controlled by the root router (not Deco).

and so, I can see draw backs of using AP due to some lack of features but are there benefits?

thanks.
