15 Wonderful Wicker Decor Ideas • One Brick At A Time

14 Dec.,2023

I am going to start this post on wicker decor ideas right at the beginning, with the most basic question. What is wicker?

How many of you have wondered whether the terms wicker, rattan and cane all mean the same thing or are each different? This has forever confused me, and so the first thing I did when I started writing this post was look up the difference.

What Is Wicker?

Originally, wicker was a technique of weaving. The material used for this weaving was any natural, plant based material, such as rattan or cane. Now the term wicker is used to describe all of these – the weaving technique, the materials used (which now also include ‘synthetic’ wicker) and the products made.

Not so confusing after all, right?

Ok, so now that we’ve sorted that out, let’s start with how we can use wicker in our homes.

Wicker Decor Ideas

I love using wicker. I guess that’s kind of obvious. You’ve seen me use a lot of wicker decor in my work, and I would honestly love to use more. And I don’t mean just the furniture.

I would love to try out different ways of using wicker in the spaces I design. Which is one of the main reasons I decided to write this post. So that I have a ready library of inspiration to look up every time I think wicker decor!

I’m starting today’s list with what I already know…

1 – Wicker Furniture

You’ve seen me use lots of beautiful wicker furniture in my own home.

You are welcomed into my home, in the foyer, with these beautiful wicker chairs that we have owned for more than a decade.

And I love the old world charm of these upholstered cane chairs that grace our living room.

We also used some exquisite wicker furniture pieces in our Modern Tropical Living Room.

This chair, for instance, is super stylish and extremely comfortable.

2 – Wicker Panelled Wardrobes

Another place I’ve been wanting to use cane for a long time now is on wardrobes. We’ve planned it a couple of times but for one reason or another, it hasn’t worked out yet. These pics here make me want to get started right away..

Natural cane is a classic that will easily fit into almost any space.

Cane looks beautiful with white too.

And makes a stunning contrast with black.

I think this black wicker is a great idea too, and would love to experiment with this.

Being a neutral in it’s natural shade, wicker would actually compliment just about any colour.

3 – Wall Panelling

While we are talking of panelling wardrobes, why not the walls themselves?

I’ve used cork sheet panelling on the book shelf wall in our Modern Tropical Living Room. These magnificent images want me to try the same with wicker too.

The advantage of using most natural materials is that the keep a space feeling light and cool in the summers and warm and cozy in cold temperatures.

If the whole wall is too much to handle, highlighting just a part of it with the wicker is a good option.

Love how this wall has been broken down into separate panels to break the monotony.

4 – Wicker Clad Ceilings

Just as with the walls, cladding the ceilings with wicker is great for hot and cold climates.

It’s also a great way to bring the outdoors in and looks amazing in transitional spaces.

Love how the wicker, wood trim and paint make for so many textures in this recessed ceiling.
