Welding Helmet Care and Maintenance

04 Sep.,2023

Your welding helmet protects your face and eyes while you weld. But what protects your welding helmet?

Welding Helmet Care & Maintenance

Welders work in tough conditions every day; hot, humid and dirty environments and constant exposure to welding fume can have a significant impact on the service life of your welding shield. In helping to protect your mask against the elements, carrying out a regular welding mask care and maintenance schedule is recommended. Caring for your Speedglas auto-darkening welding helmet can also have a positive impact on performance and protection. Regularly changing your cover lenses when they become damaged or pitted helps maintain clear vision – meaning more precise welds and less time grinding or reworking. Inspecting your welding helmet for cracks or other impact damage helps ensure your helmet is providing the correct protection and complies with the relevant Australian & New Zealand Standards.

Welding Helmets with Respiratory Protection

When it comes to auto-darkening welding helmets with respiratory protection, consumables and respiratory filters must be changed at suitable intervals to maintain the desired level of protection. If you are welding with a Speedglas 9100 respiratory welding helmet with 3M Adflo PAPR this means monitoring the condition of your particle filter, pre-filter, spark arrestor or optional gas filter for particle breakthrough or damage. It is important to remember never to clean your Adflo filters using compressed air, as this may puncture small holes in the filter – meaning it will no longer effectively filter particles and provide you with adequate protection.
