How to Make a Simple Reversible Bucket Hat

I previously made a child’s bucket hat for Sew Very Crafty that has proven very popular so I thought I would create an adult version of the hat now that summer is upon us. This is a simple sewing project that can be made in just a short time.  It is fun and functional.  This hat is perfect to keep the sun off in the summer months so give this one a try. If you are interested in a more retro wide brimmed style check out my wide brimmed sun hat pattern and tutorial.

I used some fun fabric for this project that I got at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores.  It is a Simplicity Vintage fabric and a plain red lining.  How fun is that?  I also added some Pellon 808 interfacing to give this hat some structure.  You can head to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get exactly what you need for your bucket hat project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. What you will Need: How to Make a Simple Reversible Bucket Hat

Step 1: Cut out the interfacing

Using the pattern pieces cut out the interfacing on the fold.

Step 2: Fuse the interfacing

Fuse the pieces of interfacing to the wrong sides of the outer fabric following the manufacturers instructions.

Step 3: Cut out the fabrics

Place the outer fabric and the lining fabric together. By cutting the fabrics together you make sure that they pieces are the same size and it saves time.

Step 4: Stitch the brim of the bucket hat

Stitch the brim pieces right sides together at the short ends using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Do this for both the outer pieces and the lining pieces.  Turn right sides out and top stitch along both sides of the seams.

Step 5: Add the lining to the outer Brim of the bucket hat

Place the lining and the outer brim pieces right sides together and pin.  Stitch along the bottom of the brim using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Clip the curves and turn right sides out and press.  Top stitch along the bottom of the brim.

Step 6: Stitch the Upper band

Stitch the upper band pieces right sides together at the short end using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Do this for both the outer pieces and the lining pieces.  Turn right sides out and top stitch along both sides of the seam.  Clip the top curves of the upper band.

Step 7: Add the crown

Stitch the upper band to the crown right sides together.  It is best to mark the four centers of the circles on the crown and the band to line them up.  Pin the upper band to the crown and stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Do this for both the outer and the lining pieces.  Turn right sides out and top stitch long the seam you just stitched on both the outer and lining pieces.

Step 8: Stitch crown to the brim

Place the crown right sides together with the brim.  Stitch the brim to the crown using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 9: Add the outer crown to the lining

Place the outer hat into the lining so that they are right sides together.  Line up the seams and pin all the way around.  Stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving an opening for turning.

Step 10: finish the Bucket hat

Turn the hat right sides out.  Close the opening using blind stitch.  Topstitch around the seam you just finished.  You have now completed your simple reversible bucket hat.
